Frequently Asked Questions About Squirrels and Squirrel Removal
What type of Squirrels are in my attic?
Our area is home to 2 types of attic-dwelling squirrels- flying squirrels and gray squirrels. Both species will generate a considerable amount of noise in ceilings and walls. As a general rule of thumb, noises at night are usually from flying squirrels and noises during the day (or at dawn and dusk) is from gray squirrels.
I hear noises in my attic. Could it be a squirrel in my attic?
If you hear noises in your Shreveport or Bossier City attic and you are unsure as to the source, it’s relatively easy to determine if it’s squirrels – squirrels are active during the daytime. Thus, if you hear scampering and scurrying noises during the day, it’s likely squirrels. Other attic-dwelling animals, such as rats and mice, bats, flying squirrels, opossums, and raccoons, are nocturnal, so they mostly only make noise at night.
Why are there squirrels in my attic!!
Attics make a great place to live! They are warm and dry and safe. Shreveport or Bossier City Gray Squirrels are highly adaptable animals, and they are very agile. They are arboreal, which means they live in trees. Squirrels are very urbanized animals, as you can see when you look out your North Louisiana window. They are members of the rodent family, and are excellent at gnawing and chewing on wood. Combine these factors, and of course it makes sense that female squirrels chew their way into attics in order to have and raise young. In fact, male squirrels or any squirrel at any time of the year may find that an attic makes a good place to safely spend the night and store nuts.
What Health Risks Do Squirrels Pose?
Most people think that squirrels, health-wise, are pretty harmless and that they do not pose health risks to humans. However, this is a wrong notion to have. Squirrels can be pretty dangerous. Like all animals, squirrels can carry parasites, they leave behind excrement, and they can leave both in your attic. Squirrel droppings, like pretty much any wildlife dropping, are associated with Leptospirosis and Salmonella.
Can I just use some kind of Squirrel Poison?
There is no registered poison for squirrels. There is no legal poison for squirrels. There’s no effective poison that I know of for squirrels, though I admit that I don’t know much about poisoning animals. That’s because I consider poison the worst possible approach to animal control. It’s ineffective and inhumane. If you were able to successfully poison a squirrel, it would most likely die in the attic, where it would decompose for weeks, and create a horrible odor throughout the house.
Will trapping be a permanent solution to squirrels in my attic?
Most likely not, trapping is usually the first step in a process that should include removal, exclusion and attic clean up. Removing a family of squirrels from your Shreveport or Bossier City home but leaving entry points and the squirrel and chipmunk odors will surely be an invitation to other animals.
